How To Attach Stone Wall Cladding

If you have an unattractive surface or project in your home that you would love to cover with some natural stone cladding, you may want to do the project yourself. But do you have any idea of how to attach wall cladding? Surprisingly, the process is relatively easy.

Begin by checking that the surface you intend to attach the wall cladding to is solid and strong enough to hold up the stone. If you’re unsure, a builder should be able to tell you how much weight a particular wall can withstand. Clean the surface thoroughly to ensure that no dust or dirt remains.

If the wall cladding is being attached to an outside surface or in a wet area, such as the bathroom, a waterproofing substance should be applied to the wall to ensure it is not susceptible to water damage.

Next, prepare the adhesive mix you are using to attach the wall cladding, being sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Cement based powder adhesives are generally recommended for stone, but ensure the adhesive is suitable for the type of stone you are using. If you plan to use the cladding as a water feature or in a swimming pool, ensure that the adhesive is water resistant.

Using a notched trowel, apply the adhesive to the surface, making sure that it covers the entire wall where the cladding is to be placed. Remember to work quickly as the adhesive will begin setting immediately. Then, firmly press the cladding into position.

Make sure that you wipe away any adhesive residue that may have found its way onto the stone wall cladding and, once the surface has completely set, you will have a new attractive feature for your home.
